City Sanctuary is one of three Predator Free Dunedin projects, connecting the two existing projects happening to the North of Dunedin and on the Otago Peninsula. Together, we are working towards creating a predator free Dunedin by 2050.
Our vision is to create a vibrant City Sanctuary for Dunedin where wildlife can thrive and where communities are empowered to protect native biodiversity. We want Dunedin to be the first city to fully embrace and normalise community-led, city-wide predator control in backyards and on public reserves.
Our core goals are to:
- Enable residents and communities to lead predator control on public land.
- Support communities and residents with backyard predator control, sustaining their actions and reporting outcomes.
- Inspire residents and communities to take further action to protect and restore Dunedin’s natural heritage.
City Sanctuary includes 8,349 hectares across Dunedin’s city and urban areas, extending from North East Valley to South Dunedin to Brighton and Chain Hills. Over the next few years we will be focused on encouraging backyard trapping across thirteen pilot and priority suburb s, as well as establishing trap networks throughout ten priority reserves.
Our three pilot suburbs include Caversham, Maori Hill and North Dunedin where we will provide hands-on support for communities to establish backyard trapping in their neighbourhoods for a 1 year period. This will allow us to better understand community motivations to participate in predator control and the effectiveness of different predator control methods while also reducing predator numbers and monitoring ecological outcomes.
We are seeking a friendly and outgoing team member to assist with this mahi by supporting residents and communities to carry out backyard trapping in our pilot suburbs.
Role Description
We are seeking a community coordinator to support residents, community stakeholders and volunteers to carry out community-led backyard trapping in our pilot suburbs.
Our ideal candidate is naturally charismatic and able to get on with a diverse range of people and communities. You are confident talking with people about conservation in a way that’s accessible and speaks to people’s values. You’re an organised, well-practiced multi-tasker who has no trouble meeting the needs of communities and ensuring the project’s key milestones are met. You see change as an opportunity to think creatively and are quick to troubleshoot.
We welcome applications from a diverse range of backgrounds. Although qualifications and experience in conservation and/or community engagement are preferred, we would be willing to support the right person to learn and develop their skills in this field.
Knowledge
- Knowledge of and passion for Aotearoa/New Zealand’s native flora and fauna, conservation and key community conservation efforts in the Dunedin area. A background or experience (paid or voluntary) in conservation, specifically predator control, would be ideal but isn’t required.
- Knowledge of workplace health and safety requirements.
Qualifications
- A tertiary qualification in a relevant field (such as environmental science, zoology, communications, social science, marketing or education) would be ideal.
- A current full drivers license is essential.
Experience
- Demonstrated experience (paid or voluntary) in community engagement or support.
- Customer-focused work experience in the retail, hospitality or tourism sector would be an advantage.

Tasks
- Manage and implement the pilot site audience assessments (surveying).
- Organise and deliver community engagement events such as information sessions, technical talks and training workshops.
- Support community members and groups to carry out predator monitoring and trapping in their backyards.
- Ensure volunteers and backyard trappers are following standard operating procedures, best practice guidelines and health and safety practices
- Recruit, train and support community volunteers.
- Assist communities to monitor the success of their trapping initiatives via pest and outcome monitoring initiatives.
- Create stories and resources with the City Sanctuary Community Engagement Facilitator.
- Manage the volunteer database and trap catch records.

- 1 in 10 households in the North Dunedin pilot site have completed their three rounds of community assessment survey by 30th November 2021.
